Position Summary: 

As Ambry’s Director of Commercial Learning & Development, you will lead and supervise the CL&D team in the design and delivery of clinical and technical training, and related support for the Commercial Team to include: field sales, internal sales and customer support teams (PAAM,CS, and lead generation), Payor Relations, Patient Financial Services and Marketing.  The Director, CL&D will be responsible for the overall strategic plan for the department, including short and long-term planning, goal setting and prioritization for the team, budget and resource planning, personnel development, and project management.

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Manage the Commercial Learning & Development team to include selection, training and development, coaching, counseling, and performance management of employees.
  • Develop and manage short and long-term strategic planning initiatives with the CL&D and Commercial Operations teams, including strategic learning roadmaps, annual business planning, quarterly executive-level reporting, and weekly team prioritization meetings.
  • Work cross-functionally to plan, organize, design, develop, communicate and implement training-related programs that ensure clarity of message, define “actionable” items and outline expected business results.
  • At minimum, oversee employee foundations training, advanced concepts training for tenured employees, monthly AmbryUniversity trainings, and content for national sales meetings.
  • Driving complex, medium to large-scale initiatives with sponsors, key stakeholders, and team members using strong project management/leadership to drive initiatives from conception to evaluation.
  • Determine the most effective training vehicle for each training-related opportunity and ensure that adult learning principles are consistently applied.
  • Develop and manage learning measurement strategy and tactics in order to produce objective and subjective insights on the business impact of training initiatives
  • Facilitate the design and development of new training programs, training tools and aids.
  • Review and evaluate the effectiveness of training-related initiatives based upon business results, internal “customer” feedback and/or quantitative measures such as training evaluations or knowledge/skill “tests”.
  • Assess and manage learning technology tools such as learning management systems, virtual training delivery platforms, and learning engagement tools in order to solve business and learning needs.
  • Conduct ‘train-the-trainer’ sessions for the field, Business Unit and Home Office Leadership Team on new and existing programs to ensure consistency in content/message across all markets.
  • Review and integrate external training materials/resourced for internal use where we can leverage vendor-related support or negotiate with outside training vendors.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational activities, maintain professional networks, and participate in professional
  • Produce quarterly reports for senior commercial management
  • Other responsibilities as assigned. 


  • Required: Bachelor's Science Degree – Business, Marketing, Biology, Chemistry, Medical Technology, Education, Psychology, or Nursing
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in a health-related field life sciences, business, education, or psychology
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in learning and development, talent development, and/or organizational development
  • 3-5 years related experience in genetic services, product management, or sales
  • 2 years of sales or sales training experience in healthcare or life sciences
  • Experience in creating and conducting team-based educational sessions or advanced organizational development degree preferred
  • Previous management experience supervising a high-performance team
  • Strong knowledge of genetics and genetics industry preferred; ability to master relevant clinical and product related information required.
  • Excellent ability to engage with people at all levels of an organization. Proven track record of communicating and processing complex and sensitive information in both verbal and written formats.
  • Exceptional ability to prioritize and complete multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to translate strategic goals into appropriate development and talent programs that expertly balance the evolving priorities of the organization.
  • Excellent coaching and mentoring skills.
  • Expertise across a variety of instructional methods and training techniques including curriculum design principles, adult learning theory, and blended learning strategies.
  • Experience in group facilitation and team coaching with a track record of improving overall performance.
  • Strong project management skills. Must have the ability to document and communicate project plans, monitor work in progress, and achieve project milestones/end results for others to understand.
  • Strong business acumen, with the ability to credibly make a business case, by linking current and anticipated business challenges with learning and development solutions.
  • Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) or other industry learning and development credentials strongly preferred
