JOB SUMMARY

 

The Director is a key member of the Global Learning + Development (L+D) team, specifically positioned to lead the design and development of service and culture training programs for Marriott’s brand programs, platforms and project initiatives.

 

The Director is expected to demonstrate deep learning leadership expertise (gained from both academic and professional work experience) in order to lead projects using both classic and contemporary learning design strategies that meet learner and business needs.  The Director is responsible for the design and development of products utilizing a variety of delivery methodologies, as well as leading the design and development efforts of Instructional Designers. The Director, Learning Development supports a collection of brands for design and development efforts inclusive of the managed, franchise, management and hourly audiences. This position requires leadership, strong project management, instructional design expertise, development and client management experience. The Director, Learning Development will lead Instructional Designers and/or external vendors in the design and development of learning items. The Director, Learning Development will have Instructional Designers report directly to them, in addition to directing the work of a larger cadre of internal and external design teams.

 

CORE WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Learning Development

  • Scope the learning and development needs for the brands to identify the resources, learning objectives, output milestones, budget, and timeline for each project.
  • Determine whether to build, buy or curate content to meet the needs of the client.
  • Strong experience building learning items from analysis, design and storyboard, development, project input and client presentation.
  • Firsthand development responsibilities for complex, highly visible projects that require senior learning leadership direction and support.
  • Strong leadership and ability to interact with subject matter experts across a variety of clients, e.g., brand or discipline, to design and develop effective learning solutions.
  • Clearly and concisely present ideas to clients on learning item design.
  • Execute learning item(s) review with client to secure sign-off at each designated milestone to keep the project on time and on budget.
  • Package multiple items to create curriculum, as appropriate.
  • Build and test items in learning management system as part of the deployment activities.
  • Partner with Brand Talent in learning initiative planning for the designated client(s) and to build and develop strong client relationships.
  • Partner with L+D Delployment, L+D Delivery, Continent Learning Leads / Communications / L+D Governance to implement and rollout learning programs as appropriate.

 

Project Management

  • Partner with Learning Operations team to ensure that all projects are accounted for through Governance processes.
  • Coordinates and implements work and projects for instructional designers and/or external vendors (e.g., capacity management)
  • Generates and provides accurate and timely results in the form of reports, presentations, etc.
  • Analyzes information and evaluates results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Develops specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work.
  • Sets and tracks goal progress for self and others.
  • Monitors the work of others to ensure it is completed on time and meets expectations.
  • Provides direction and assistance to other organizational units’ policies and procedures, and efficient control and utilization of resources.

Scan the learning and educational technology environment (external to Marriott) to propose new tools, processes, and vendors to elevate the L+D department’s capabilities

Requirements

CANDIDATE PROFILE

 

Education and Experience

  • BA/BS (or equivalent) in instructional design, human resources, or related field required.
  • 7+ years of instructional design and development experience.
  • Significant design and development experience and demonstrated ability in applying adult learning theory and iterative instructional design methodologies (i.e., Successive Approximation Model (SAM)), using a variety of innovative approaches.
  • Strong development experience using Rapid Development tools, e.g., Articulate, Storyline, Captivate, Adobe Creative Cloud Applications.
  • Experience consulting to business leaders, providing training design and development across multiple mediums (e.g. eLeanring, video, instructor-led, virtual ILT)
  • Experience managing third-party development vendors who produce training materials under Marriott’s direction
  • Experience leading the development of cutting-edge and digital learning programs for Premium Consumer Brands in the respective brand segment supported (e.g., luxury, premium, select)
  • Fiscal responsibility for projects
  • Expeirence managing complex programs and learning projects leveraging project management expertise.

 

Preferred Experience

  • Graduate/post graduate degree in Instructional Design, Adult Learning, or related Education field.
  • Hospitality/Lodging industry and Marketing expertise preferred with general knowledge of lifestyle brands, hotel operations, continent and headquarters environments
  • Demonstrated success working in a complex, service-intensive, deadline-driven environment associated with consumer, marketing, or loyalty initiatives
  • Demonstrated success in working with and influencing cross-functional work teams in a matrix organization
  • Demonstrated success managing multiple projects on time and on budget within a cost recovery business environment
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions in a timely manner sometimes with incomplete information, under tight deadlines and in high pressure situations
  • Experience in publishing and testing in a learning management system.
  • Project management certification.
  • Proven experience in development of multiple learning modalities, i.e., digital mobile, online.
  • History of consistently delivering positive business results
  • History of developing others and self in the learning discipline
  • History of external involvement in professional associations and learning-related organizations

 

Knowledge and Skills

  • Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment; experience operating in a matrix environment.
  • Strong communication and directional capabilities when working with an external vendor to ensure development success.
  • Ability to work with multiple stakeholders at varying levels of management with credibility.
  • Comfort with complexity, ambiguity, and change.
  • Possess strong content writing ability, oral communication skills, creativity, attention to detail and excellent proofing and editing skills.
  • Self-starter with self-confidence, enthusiasm, and strong customer service orientation.
