Director of Faculty Development

The Director of Faculty Development (FD) and Programs works under the direction of the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation to provide vision and oversight for all forms of faculty development in the College of Natural Sciences (CNS), including programming and training opportunities to facilitate faculty professional success. 


Essential Functions:

  • Design and implement comprehensive programs for faculty development to enhance faculty thriving and success at all career stages.
  • Assess programs and their effectiveness.
  • Serve as a point of contact for communications within CNS for all faculty development needs.
  • Provide leadership for CNS faculty development support programs.
  • Coordinate training workshops and seminars for CNS faculty in areas of career management and advancement including seminars on sabbatical preparation, tenure and pre-tenure workshops, and other faculty development areas as needed.
  • Coordinate with the Center for Teaching Excellence and Faculty Development, the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education and Development, the Associate Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and Operations, and the Director of the Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment to support faculty development needs in all areas of the college mission as needed.
  • Provide reports of faculty recruitment and retention activities to Associate Dean of Research and Innovation.
  • Develop activities and facilitate programs to orient, support and mentor new faculty and first-term Heads and Chairs.
  • Serve as CNS advisor to the Lecturer’s Council in support of faculty development of Lecturers in the College.
  • Develop and oversee programming to enhance leadership skills in all faculty. 
  • Initiate and facilitate programs that positively impact faculty thriving, well-being, departmental workplace climate, mentoring, and diversity, equity and inclusion across the college.
  • Initiate and offer programming that supports diversity, equity and inclusion, including for women faculty and members of underrepresented groups.
  • Serve as a CNS resource to faculty regarding to emerging needs and opportunities in faculty work-life integration.
  • Assist faculty in strategies for seeking and applying for awards from foundations and professional societies. Assist in facilitation of CNS Awards process and the promotion of faculty for campus awards.
  • Work closely with the Director of Research Development, CNS faculty, and staff (departmental and college) identify outreach opportunities, especially as relevant to broader impacts associated with grants, and establish activities that support and enhance faculty outreach and engagement.
  • Build and provide a program of coordinated and aligned outreach services across the college and facilitate the development of an overarching CNS outreach support strategy.
  • Assist in coordinating special events and programs that serve regular and occasional needs of the college. 
  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness. 
  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.



  • Master’s degree in higher education administration, organization development or related science field with at least five years of progressively responsible professional work and administrative experience. 
  • Excellent leadership skills in building collaborative relationships across departments and colleges.
  • Demonstrated experience working closely with faculty members in a research institution; proven ability to coordinate and work well with multidisciplinary faculty, administrators, staff, and external constituents.
  • Experience with faculty development programming and positive organizational development in higher education environment.
  • Excellent communication, writing and editing skills, and oral communication skills; knowledge of computer applications.
  • Outstanding organization skills and ability to effectively manage multiple demands simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Training in the tools of professional leadership, thriving and well-being.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering the success of a diverse faculty.
  • Ability to work confidently and effectively with multiple faculty members to develop trust and a shared sense of community.
  • Experience in facilitating programs using the best practices of positive workplace development.
  • Trained in professional coaching.
