Summary

The director of leadership development serves as content expert in the areas of leadership and governance. In addition, the director works with the director of programs, the director of instructional design and technology, and the vice president of professional development to create philosophy, programming, and content for leadership development; both virtual and in-person.  The director works cross-functionally to lend expertise and coordinate efforts between PD (Professional Development) and various other teams that may be working on various leadership focused projects.  The director writes various articles and contributes to various books on the topic of leadership and governance. The director also coordinates, implements, and facilitates the SLTE (School Leadership Team Experience) institute. This position reports to the vice president of the Professional Development team.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Serves as content expert in the areas of leadership and governance
    • Works with the president, legal counsel, and vice president of PD to create and deliver presentations on leadership development and governance
    • Liaises with the communications team to create written products (i.e. articles, pamphlets, books) that aid independent school leaders and trustees in best practices
    • Is available to heads and trustees for phone consultations when the need arises to help address various leadership and governance challenges
  • Works with the VP of professional development to create and implement new programming, both virtual and in-person, that focus on leadership and governance
    • Liaises with the marketing and media teams to develop and promote new professional development initiatives
    • Organizes, tabulates, and prepares program evaluations and reports for new programs
    • Works with the vice president and marketing team to create visual branding and marketing strategy for new programming
    • Strategizes and liaises with the communications and media teams to promote programs through social media and website
    • Works with the vice president of PD to create pilot programming
    • Works with the vice president of PD and director of programming to incorporate new programming in to annual conference
    • Works with the director of instructional design and technology to create a comprehensive online professional development delivery system
    • Works closely with the director of conference logistics and/or director of instructional design and technology to ensure that all necessary programmatic details have been addressed  
  • Serves as project director for SLTE (School Leadership Team Experience) and LtP (Leadership through Partnership).
    • Works with the vice president to develop institute content and direct successful implementation of all aspects of SLTE and LtP.
    • Oversees recruitment of faculty and speakers for each program
    • Works with vice president to develop and implement curriculum
    • Works with marketing to manage communications with institute participants
    • Manages and reconciles assigned institute budgets
    • Creates and manages institute timelines and to do lists
    • Organizes, tabulates, and prepares evaluations and final reports for institutes
  • Works cross functionally to help tie the work of PD to the work that other teams are doing in the promotion of leadership and governance
    • Works with the president and vice president to create and manage partnerships with different organizations
    • Liaises with the studies, insights and research team to collect information that will aid in the development of new programs and initiatives.
    • Works with the VP for equity and justice to ensure that programmatic goals are closely aligned and complimentary
    • Liaises with the innovation team to create complimentary programming that best serves NAIS member schools
  • Provides leadership to the professional development team
    • Works with the vice president to originate and execute professional development programming that is mission based, relevant, timely and valued.
    • Serves as point person for the team when designated
    • Oversees and participates in diversified administrative duties for the professional development team
    • Assists the vice president in the development and refinement of team budgets
    • Assume other responsibilities as assigned

Requirements

  • Travel up to 20% per year and work weekends as required
  • Work and leadership experience in independent schools preferred
  • Knowledge of best practices in virtual teaching and learning formats
  • Detail oriented with exceptional organizational and time-management skills
  • Project management skills and the ability to handle multiple activities simultaneously
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical ability
  • Creativity
  • Strong written, research, oral (listening and speaking) and interpersonal skills
  • Work independently, as part of a team, and with cross team projects
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong volunteer and professional partnerships
  • Strong office automation skills (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software)
