The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) is a global association for occupational safety and health professionals. For more than 100 years ASSP has supported occupational safety and health (OSH) professionals in their efforts to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities.   ASSP provides education, advocacy, standards developments and a professional community to members in order to advance their careers and the OSH profession as a whole.   ASSP has a staff of 80, annual revenue of $19M and is located in Park Ridge, IL.

Position Summary

The Director of Professional Development is responsible for developing and presenting high-quality and leading-edge professional development content and programs in a variety of media, such as classroom-based conferences, seminars, and workshops; online learning such as webinars and self-paced learning, and other leading-edge media that address the needs of ASSP members and the profession, providing the knowledge needed to achieve professional goals.   S/he will be responsible for directing the department staff to ensure effective collaboration and coordination with members and all ASSP staff. The position reports to the Chief Executive Officer.

Position Responsibilities

  • Manage the efforts of the Professional Development team for content development and delivery including all Education and Conferences and Meetings, ensuring effective individual oversight, coordination and productive work output.
  • Manage the development and implementation of the Society strategic plan for professional development working with the Council of Professional Development and other Society groups to ensure support of the Society’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Work with appropriate volunteers and leaders to understand market needs for professional development and education for the Society and the profession.
  • Work with the marketing department in collection and analysis of data to address market needs for professional development programs.
  • Work with the marketing department to develop operational plans and achieve revenue goals.
  • Direct resource planning and utilization for the department, including the preparation, execution, and periodic monitoring of the department budget and results.
  • Oversee all Professional Development Conference planning and activities and work collaboratively with all departmental functions to meet the conference goals and objectives.
  • Develop the annual Professional Development Conference Program working with the planning committee to identify conference objectives and to determine and select appropriate media, topics and speakers.
  • Produce the program descriptions and educational program schedule for the Professional Development Conference and develop written copy to facilitate marketing of the conference.
  • Communicate information internally to department staff and externally where appropriate, to accomplish the Society and department mission.
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Council of Professional Development and the Professional Development Conference Planning Committee.
  • Oversee the work performance and development of department team to ensure high-quality work, regular performance evaluation, progressive professional development, and commitment to ASSP’s values.
  • Regularly communicate with the Society’s Chief Executive Officer on all significant department matters.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Manage all department staff providing overall direction, coordination, coaching and evaluation.
  • Directly supervise four managers and two support staff.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include participating in the hiring process; training; planning; assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Requirements

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred (Instructional Design/Adult Learning, MBA).
  • Eight to ten years of experience; demonstrated ability to develop adult learning/education programs.
  • Knowledge of the training market and/or technical areas. Knowledge of the safety profession a plus.
  • Experience in a membership and/or professional association a plus.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, comfortable working in a collaborative team setting, entrepreneurial approach, affinity for networking and high level of confidence and poise.
  • A strong customer service orientation.
  • Strong communication skills. Comfortable communicating with Board of Directors, management, volunteers, and the public.
  • Experience working with budgets and logistical planning.
  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office applications, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other applications.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Ability to think innovatively and strategically to enhance profitability.
  • Flexible with a strong work ethic, and good judgment.
  • Commitment to ASSP Values.
  • Ability to travel to meetings and annual conference.
