Reporting to the Corporate Vice President, Human Resources, this position is responsible for leading the planning and implementation of learning, development and performance enhancement initiatives and programs that support Woodward's mission, vision and strategy.

The incumbent will apply business and industry knowledge to partner with the Corporate Vice President, HR, Business Leadership and the Global HR team to execute Organizational Capability and Learning and Development strategies. The position is responsible for managing Woodward's corporate learning function (Woodward University) and for building a common curriculum within a shared service model. The position is the process owner for designing, developing, managing the annual cadence, and continuous improvement of Woodward's enterprise Talent Management process (leadership review, career structures and succession planning, development planning, high potential programs, rotational assignments, etc.) as well as the Leading Performance Management Process (goal planning, leader feedback, talent review, reflection and annual conversation).

Essential Functions

  • Develops and implements a strategy to meet Woodward's Organization Capability and Learning and Development objectives; creates the optimal alignment between learning investments and the strategic priorities of the Company
  • Serves as program manager and expert in our Talent Management process (business center reviews, succession planning and development planning)
  • Actively partners with VP's, Human Resources and Executive Leadership to understand business needs and skill gaps
  • Engages in providing solutions to succession development and skills gaps within the organization
  • Leads Woodward's Leading Performance Management Process (LPMP) and develops program solutions aligned with business strategy
  • Uses the Woodward competency framework to identify relevant learning opportunities
  • Provides processes, models and tools that enable leaders and members to tightly integrate their individual development goals with business goals
  • Responsible for developing learning solutions that can be leveraged to achieve long-term business success and meet organizational needs
  • Manages Woodward University and supporting programs in alignment with the vision and business strategies of Woodward
  • Responsible for the selection, development, performance and talent management of Global Learning and Performance staff. Guides the goal setting process for the staff (includes business and developmental goals). Monitors the process, progress and results
  • Provides leadership and guidance to the Global Learning and Performance Staff in the areas of instruction design, administration and learning technology
  • Leverages effective learning program design standards to ensure optimal match of learning delivery channels (e.g. classroom, technology based learning) with participant needs
  • Analyzes needs and proposes solutions; works with various stakeholders to gather input and build agreement to support the the learning plan
  • Evaluates the impact of learning program initiatives and services on the most critical drives of business value; monitors progress, takes corrective action as needed, organizes resources, etc.
  • Establishes metrics and designs dashboards that effectively demonstrate and communicate the L&P function's contributions to organizational performance
  • Oversees the development of design and quality standards for programs; maintains the quality and consistency of enterprise-wide learning programs
  • Makes recommendations on program and course content, outside vendor selection and delivery options
  • Uses "make or buy" criteria in determining which programs and services should be designed and/or delivered by external providers. Manages external vendors to ensure programs are cost effective and design meets established needs
  • Interfaces with Global Supply Chain to negotiate contacts for outside services
  • Manages the communication, marketing and branding of the function and its associated components to maximize utilization of L&P programs and services and to build a compelling brand that attracts and retains top talent
  • Stays abreast of learning industry trends and developments and integrates state-of-the-art practices where it makes sense
  • Provides tools and systems (Learning Management System) that serve as a robust learning infrastructure
  • Oversees the continuous improvement of administration and logistics systems and processes for maximum efficiency (e.g. course scheduling and registration)
  • Develops and manages annual budget and monitors profit plan
  • Cultivates close relationships with field HR key stakeholders to develop and maintain L&P programs and services
  • Builds strong two-way relationships with the executive staff and their teams
  • Participates as a key member of the Global HR Staff and Core Team

Other Functions

  • Participates in the delivery of selected core courses
  • Works with the CVP, HR on key projects (e.g. Mid-Year Reviews, Global HR Forums, Annual Strategic Planning)
  • May lead or participate in HR global projects as assigned


Education or Formal Training

  • BA/BS in Business Administration or other related field of study
  • MBA in a related field preferred
  • Degree course work in workplace learning and development, human resources, organization behavior, organizational development, etc. desired
  • Certifications in nationally recognized management development programs (e.g. Achieve Global, Wilson Learning, DDI) desired

Experience Required

  • Minimum of five (5) years as a training/learning/management development/performance manager or specialist with demonstrated ability in the following areas: needs assessment, course design, development and delivery, performance management, and talent management
  • Experience in evaluating and maintaining a high standard of program effectiveness and quality ensuring alignment with business objectives
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a leadership/management role required
  • Global experience desired
  • Domestic and international travel required
