Job Summary

The Director, Training and Development conducts integrated training needs assessments across the ACGME and ACGME International (ACGME-I). This position designs, coordinates, and delivers a comprehensive range of training and education programs to address the needs of ACGME/ACGME-I employees, while also seeking out other experts. Overseeing the ACGME’s Training function, the Director, Training and Development is responsible for educating and managing employee development programs across all levels of staff, implementing training strategies, and assessing and evaluating training outcomes and effectiveness. The Director, Training and Development will support employee relations, and other Human Resources functions as needed.

ACGME Training Function Background

The ACGME Training function will be dedicated to promoting and supporting employee development and organizational effectiveness by creating and offering high quality, innovative, and diverse education and training programs. The ACGME Training function is committed to the continued growth and development of the ACGME’s most valuable resource: its employees. 

Training programs are designed to meet individual, group/departmental, and organizational needs and objectives. The ACGME Training function will strive, through its professional development programs, to enhance and cultivate individual learning and growth as a means to create a culture and workplace environment that demonstrates the value of each employee by improving the quality of work-life and job satisfaction.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify and assess current and future ACGME/ACGME-I training needs through organization-wide needs assessments.
  • Develop, implement, and deliver professional development programming for all levels of staff, including general employee development, supervisory/management training, and leadership development.
  • Research, evaluate, and vet resources that support development goals and objectives, ensuring that content, delivery method, and style are appropriate for ACGME/ACGME-I culture and needs, while driving cost and operational efficiencies.
  • Work with the Vice President, Human Resources and the Chief of Staff and Chief Education and Organizational Development Officer to create an annual schedule of programming.
  • In coordination with the Department of Communications, develop instructional materials, staff communications, and in-house publicity about development opportunities.
  • Conduct ongoing evaluation of program effectiveness and recommend modifications for future programming to meet established needs of management and staff; prepare periodic reports for executive and senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with department Chiefs, Senior Vice Presidents, and managers to analyze and evaluate the competence levels of department staff members and assesses gaps in critical knowledge, skills, and abilities; use evaluation data for quality improvement of training offerings.
  • Develop action plans that align with the needs of the department and enhance employee performance.
  • Apply adult learning theory principles, benchmark best practices/trends, and maintain knowledge of cutting edge approaches to deliver sustainable learning solutions that drive impact.
  • Implement strategies to ensure the retention of institutional knowledge and experience to remain a strong and nimble organization.
  • Address transition planning and change management needs to ensure strong leadership and organizational effectiveness for the future.
  • Consult one-on-one with employees regarding their professional development and general employee relations issues; provide information and support to all levels of staff as necessary.
  • Handle all other Human Resources/educational/organizational projects and responsibilities as needed or assigned, ensuring timely and high quality results.
  • Handle all administrative and record-keeping functions related to training and development.
  • Manage the staff training and development budget and make recommendations for appropriate use of allocated funds.
  • Share assorted daily administrative tasks to ensure full and efficient functioning of the Department of Human Resources.
  • Supervise and mentor Special Projects Associate.
  • Work with outside sources to select trainers for different areas of development.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resource management, education, or a related area, or 7+ years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience working for an association or other not-for-profit organization valuable.
  • Extensive knowledge of instructional design theory, adult learning theory, and implementation required.
  • Proven track record of managing and facilitating all aspects of an internal employee training and development function, including assessing needs, as well as designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and training initiatives required.
  • Knowledge of and experience with learning management systems and web delivery tools required.
  • Facility with a wide variety of traditional and modern training methods and techniques required.
  • Proven ability to complete the full training cycle (needs assessment, plan, develop, deliver, monitor, and evaluate) required.
  • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills; proven ability to successfully stimulate, moderate, and manage small and large groups; and ability to understand group dynamics and provide a positive learning environment required.
  • Customer-focused, collaborative mindset with a passion for organizational development required.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills, excellent follow-through skills, and ability to think out of the box required.
  • Meticulous attention to detail required.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) required.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with all levels of staff.
  • Must speak clearly and persuasively, be able to listen, get clarification, and respond well to questions, and work collaboratively with peers in the Department of Human Resources.
  • Must be able to quickly build credibility and establish long-term relationships with all levels of staff.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects, working independently with minimal guidance.
  • Must have supervisory skills.


Position requires the significant use of standard office equipment, such as a computer, keyboard, mouse, photo copier, fax machine, telephone, etc.

Working Conditions

Most of the work of the Director, Training and Development is done in the ACGME office with the typical physical demands of an office environment.

  • Will frequently be required to sit in meetings for long periods of time.
  • Will frequently be required to stand for long periods of time while delivering training programs.
  • Will frequently be required to sit and work for extended periods of time atcomputer terminal using various computer programs and other computer tools.
  • Must be willing and able to travel if required.
