We are looking for an Instructional Designer/Education Content Manager who will be responsible for managing the development (design and implementation) of educational content for the Society, working closely with members and subject matter experts (SMEs) to create the content, and delivering the content for in-person and online environments. 

The successful candidate is efficient and comfortable being a member of a small, dynamic and growing team. SFPE's mission is to define, develop, and advance the use of engineering best practices; expand the scientific and technical knowledge base; and educate the global fire safety community, in order to reduce fire risk. We have over 4,600 members and 102 chapters worldwide.


Content Development (80%) – Work with SFPE’s Standing Committee on Professional Development to develop educational programs aligned with the profession’s identified core competencies, including a core curriculum for fire protection engineering, a new PE Exam Preparation course, and advanced engineering programs on specialized topics.

  • Create engaging learning activities and compelling course content 
  • Manages and/or collaborates with subject matter experts in the design and delivery of education programs
  • Work with subject matter experts to identify target audience’s training needs
  • Set instructional end goals and create content that matches them
  • Visualize instructional graphics, the user interface and the finished product
  • Analyze and apply trends and best practices in learning technologies and instructional design 
  • Provide exercises and activities that enhance the learning process
  • Create supporting material/media (audio, video, simulations, role-plays, games, etc.)
  • Devise modes of assessment, such as tests or quizzes, to measure the effectiveness of the course
  • Maintain project documentation and course folders
  • Manage content on the Society’s Learning Management System (LMS)

Management of LMS (10%) – Maintain and manage the online LMS, in all functions

  • Coordinate learning management systems (LMS) and facilitate a virtual learning environment

Accreditation (10%) ­- Develop and maintain existing accreditations around education and continuing education as well as monitor changes to accreditation standards and market trends.


  • Bachelor’s degree or at least two years related work experience in instructional design, educational technology or similar field
  • In-depth knowledge of learning theories and instructional design models
  • Lesson and curriculum planning skill
  • Proficient with eLearning development tools (e.g. Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate)
  • Basic HTML and Flash programming knowledge
  • Visual design skills (e.g. Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Ability to write effective copy, instructional text, audio and video scripts
  • Up to 10% travel
