GENERAL SUMMARY:The learning designer will provide expert level learning needs analysis, design, implementation and evaluation support to a range of leading-edge Member Experience education programs.  


Support the Association’s Member Experience team in all aspects of planning, scheduling, delivering and maintaining meaningful learning programs that support the strategic goals of the organization.

  • Analyze and apply trends and best practices in instructional design and learning technology.
  • Using content created by the Professional Development team, design and build engaging learning activities and compelling online courses, webinars and eLearning.
  • Participate on the Content Design Team and provide project management support to project initiatives as needed; maintain project documentation and folders.
  • Help develop instructional formats and learning objectives for desired learning solutions.
  • Collaborate with the Content Design Team and subject matter experts (as applicable) to determine the appropriate delivery strategies for target audiences.
  • Create supporting materials/media (audio, video, toolkit, etc.) as requested.
  • Maintain and manage all functions of ALA’s learning management system (LMS) — including, but not limited to, registration, profiles, course content, course setup, reporting and create and maintain documentation of all related processes.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and repurposing of learning materials or derivative products as required.
  • Manage and maintain online, webinar, web-based course and eLearning website pages.
  • Coordinate with other ALA staff and contractors to market and implement the online, webinar, web-based course and eLearning educational programs.
  • As needed, perform onsite activities during conferences and other educational programs. These could include managing volunteers, supervising audio-visual contractors and other duties.
  • Propose and monitor assigned ALA education-related budgets, conduct periodical tracking and reporting of revenues and expenses to the Associate Director, Experience Planning & Design.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



  1. Background in adult learning principles, instructional systems design and instructional product development as normally acquired through a bachelor’s degree in adult education, instructional design, instructional technology or related field. Formal instructional systems design training required.

  2. Learning Management System (LMS) experience.

  3. Demonstrated 3+ years of experience developing training-related strategies for external customers.

  4. Experience with Articulate Storyline and/or other eLearning design application platforms.

  5. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to communicate effectively with committees, instructors, members, business partners and staff.

  6. Well-organized and self-directed, with the ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.  

  7. Knowledge and application of training design and project management skills.

  8. Strong leadership skills to coordinate efforts of instructors, volunteers and staff, and the ability to function in a team and service-oriented environment.

  9. Ability to prepare, monitor and analyze budgets.

  10. Strong computer knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite with the ability to learn multiple software applications and web applications. Experience with association databases such as iMIS preferred.
