SUMMARY

Exercises discretion and independent judgment while working under the general direction of the Director of Attorney Development, while supporting the local Office Managing Partner(s) and Office Administrator and according to established Firm policies and procedures. The Professional Development Manager is responsible for all aspects of the Attorney and Business Professional development activities and processes for the Firm’s California offices. Will also provide support for Attorney Recruiting in the California offices (approximately 30%), and Attorney and Business Professional development activities for other Firm offices as required.  Essential duties are performed personally or through delegation/supervision of subordinates. Maintains professionalism and strict confidentiality in all client and Firm matters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but may not be limited to, the following. Other duties may be requested and/or assigned.   • Oversee all aspects of the California office’s MCLE initiatives, including coordinating accreditation of in-house programs and maintaining Attorneys’ MCLE hours.
  • Oversee implementation of Business Professional and Attorney Professional Development initiatives within the California offices, including training, performance management, career development and mentoring programs.
  • Partners with the Director of Attorney Development and other members of the Attorney Development team to identify and address programming needs and to design, develop, and implement programming related to professional skills, professional development, and performance management.
  • Collaborates with other members of the Attorney Development team to implement and manage Firmwide mentoring programming, including tracking and reporting.
  • Keeps abreast of trends in professional development for attorneys, and evaluates seminar content and presenter effectiveness to ensure efficient delivery of content and attorney interest on topic.
  • Provides referral services as necessary to attorneys with specific training and/or development needs.
  • Assists with annual budgeting process for Attorney Development department.
  • Assists with and implements the Firm’s national Attorney Professional Development programming.
  • The position will also support the office and the firm’s recruiting team on lateral recruiting efforts in California, including on campus interviewing for the summer program and lateral associate hiring.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

Act as a confidential resource for attorneys in the California offices providing skilled coaching and career development counseling as requested and/or required.

Participate in strategic planning with respect to all aspects of professional development, including examination of how the California offices recruit and retain Attorneys. Make recommendations on how to improve the knowledge transfer process.

Maintain current knowledge of learning and development trends and innovations in the market and use all available resources including NALP and PDC Conferences, LAALRA participation, emerging technology, and solid relationship-building with other law firms, law schools, recruiters, and Firm Attorneys.

Gather materials and work with Marketing to organize recruiting and Firm promotional literature/packages, biographical profiles, orientation manuals, training materials, etc.

Assist in maintaining a database for recruiting records and preparing requisite statistical and status reports. Provide relevant information to the Managing Partner and Office Administrator on a regular basis.

Coordinate activities/events, make reservations, and prepare itineraries/schedules, as indicated.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May directly supervise and manage employees and be responsible for their overall direction, coordination, and evaluation. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Firm’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and training; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; making recommendations for hiring, promotion, compensation, and termination.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum of three plus years experience in professional development or training in a law firm or other legal or professional services environment. Must be proficient in application of instructional design, curriculum design, and adult learning principals.

Fluency and competency in unconscious bias concepts.

Advanced knowledge of Windows-based systems, particularly the Microsoft Office 2010 suite. Familiarity with viDesktop, ViLMS, and Sharepoint highly desirable. Familiarity with document management systems and other legal applications highly desirable.

Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Written work product is appropriate to the audience and written in a clear and concise manner that effectively gets the message across. Ability to communicate with courtesy, diplomacy and discretion, efficiently follow written and verbal instructions, provide information and maintain effective relationships with a diverse group of attorneys, firm management, clients, staff and outside contacts, including speaking before groups of individuals.

Excellent organizational, planning and project management skills including accuracy, record keeping, data collection and system information. Ability to compile and analyze data and furnish concise, detailed information in report format, written correspondence, e- mail or verbally.

Highly motivated, strategic focus: ability to understand and support Firm goals, services, culture and strategy in order to present self and the Firm in a positive, professional manner. Commitment to staying informed of industry standards and best practices through professional development, to including professional reading, membership in industry groups and organizations, and participation in seminars and conferences.

Exhibit high degree of initiative in managing multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, high-stressed, detail-oriented work environment. Ability to work with frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workflow.

Dependable team player with high energy, creativity and vision who works collaboratively and cooperatively with others in a team-oriented environment. Ability to act independently within scope of the position’s responsibilities as a decision-maker and contributor on all levels.

Excellent analytical and technical skills requiring an aptitude for detail, precision and logic. Proactive with excellent troubleshooting, problem resolution, and follow-through skills. Possess the ability to identify and propose resolutions to problems in a timely manner through use of resources, including asking questions, gathering facts and reviewing records.

Must be flexible to work overtime, travel on occasion, accept tasks outside of normal job duties, and be open to assume new responsibilities if the needs of the department changes.

Ability to occasionally retrieve and distribute files, written documentation, or office supplies weighing up to 10 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is characteristic of a normal office environment with moderate exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature, etc.
