PJI is seeking an adult learning professional to manage our portfolio of conferences and training events. The ideal candidate has a passion for developing fun, interactive, and impactful learning events with the goal of mobilizing advocates and system actors to advance pretrial justice.

Organizational Background

With over 40 years of proven success in supporting pretrial justice system reform, PJI is leveraging our history, context, voice, and work to support a refined focus and shift the way in which we approach ending mass incarceration through pretrial justice.  In 2019, PJI became aware that there is no pretrial justice without racial justice and committed to aligning its mission, vision, culture, and process and procedures to that of centering racial justice. PJI is a virtual office with employees across the country.

PJI’s work falls into five core strategies. EDUCATE >INSPIRE> MOBILIZE> STEWARD>GROW. The goals of each PJI team member are aligned with these core strategies.  The Senior Associate’s core strategic goals are:

Design a portfolio of events that are responsive to the needs of learners and achieve their explicit learning objectives.

Cultivate a diverse network of faculty to bring their perspectives to events, and use events as a platform to elevate community voices.

Encourage participants to take action to improve pretrial policy or practice at the local, state, or national level as a result of participating in PJI’s events.

Ensure that PJI’s portfolio of learning events provide value to participants and are fiscally viable for PJI.

Identify opportunities to grow PJI’s community of learners and to expand our funding base.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

Equity Transformation Journey

  • A commitment to participating in PJI’s organizational equity transformation journey, including trainings, affinity groups, and challenging conversations.

  • Embracing the concept of “there is no pretrial justice without racial justice” by proactively contributing to identifying areas where inequities exist in PJI and in our external messaging and activities, and implementing the change required to center racial justice in your daily work.  

 Learning Event Strategy and Execution

  • Develop an annual strategy for in-person and virtual learning events, including learning objectives, event calendar, target audiences, and enrollment targets.

  • In partnership with the Leadership Team and the Director of Impact, ensure that PJI’s strategic vision and current positions on pretrial justice and bail reform are accurately and effectively translated to our learning events.

  • Evaluate the success of the annual event strategy and adjust as needed.

Project Management

  • Manage two MacArthur Safety and Justice Challenge convenings for 400 attendees annually, including collaborating with the Foundation and grantees, leading agenda development, and supervising event planning consultants.  This position is ultimately accountable for the success of these events.

  • Manage PJI’s hallmark event, the Pretrial Innovators Convention (PI-Con), for 250-300 attendees.  This includes working with the leadership team to establish a vision for the event; engaging partner organizations and advocates in agenda development; and designing and executing and energizing an immersive learning experience.  The next PI-Con will be held in March 2021.

  • Lead the execution of the PJI’s learning event strategy, including agenda development, budget development, oversight of project teams and consultants, and coordination of faculty.  This will include approximately six events per year with to 50 participants each.

  • Work with the leadership team to identify sponsorship opportunities and sponsors for in-person learning events. 

Content Development and Delivery

  • Serve as faculty for learning events as needed.

  • Work with the University of Pretrial community manager to provide curriculum support for virtual events.

  • Participate in PJI’s learning communities with the goal of engaging members in learning events.

  • Develop course materials.


Outreach and Promotion

  • In collaboration with Mission Support, develop and execute promotion plans for learning events.

  • Contribute to the design and creation of marketing materials and/or event swag that align with the PJI brand.

Experience, Knowledge and Skills

  • At least 8 years of experience creating dynamic, interactive training events that align with adult learning principles.

  • At least 5 years of progressive training, conference management and/or event planning experience.

  • Familiarity with blended learning strategies and the ability to design interactive blended learning events.

  • Commitment to creating seamless and productive client experiences

  • Knowledge of pretrial justice issues, including current trends in pretrial justice reform, or a willingness to acquire this knowledge quickly.

  • Skilled strategic thinker and generator of content ideas and approaches

  • Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail

  • Proficiency in Google Apps, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point), videoconferencing/web meeting software and social media web platforms

Special Working Conditions

  • Working within a virtual environment - PJI provides computer and related equipment and software essential to job execution. High speed internet and telephone service are the responsibility of the team member.

  • Required travel (approximately 25%)

  • Flexibility in working hours – occasional night and weekend hours may be required

Salary

 $80,000-100,000, annually
