Position Summary:

Our Kansas City, MO office has the opportunity for an experienced Senior Manager of Professional Development to join the Firm’s expanding practice.  The Senior Manager of Professional Development (“SMPD”) is responsible for the professional development initiatives for the Firm’s lawyers. The SMPD works closely with the Chief Diversity and Professional Development Officer (“CDPDO”) to create and operationalize a vision and strategic plan for the Firm’s professional development efforts in alignment with the Professional Development and Inclusion (PDI) department’s goals and the Firm’s strategic plan. The SMPD is an ex-oficio member of the Professional Development Steering Committee (PDSC) and works collaboratively with leaders of other administrative departments to further PD goals firm-wide.

Essential Functions:


  • Partners with the CDPDO to present and advocate for PD initiatives with Firm leadership and at local offices.  
  • Advocates convincingly and eloquently in front of different audiences (staff, senior staff, attorneys, etc.) on both PD and D&I matters as appropriate.


  • Spearheads the conceptualization, creation, development and implementation of PD programs that increase attorneys’ effectiveness and furthers the Firm’s professional development efforts and goals by working collaboratively with practice group chairs, external faculty and consultants where appropriate.
  • Works collaboratively with the D&I manager to design PD programs for targeted audiences, thereby contributing to the retention of those audiences.
  • Is an active member of the Professional Development Consortium (PDC) and Association for Talent Development (ATD). Stays abreast of developments in adult education and its application in the legal industry and beyond.


  • Participates as a member of the PDSC and the Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee (DISC). Attends meetings. Primarily responsible for the agenda (in consultation with the CDPDO). Drafts talking points for meetings and submits to CDPDO for review. Ensures follow-up tasks are carried out.
  • Oversees the administration of the PD ambassador network. Works with Senior PD Coordinator to support the PD initiatives in local offices.
  • Ensures the Associate Focus Group (AFG) is active and meets their roles and responsibilities.


  • Ensures the Senior PD Coordinator successfully administrates all PD-related applications or digital platforms, including project managing the uploading of written benchmarks to new digital platform.
  • Oversees the compiling of the Annual Memo detailing PDI department achievements. Delegates as needed to D&I manager and other members of PDI team. Submits Annual Memo to CDPDO for final approval.


  • Conceptualizes and develops internal and external PD communications. Gives input as requested on D&I-related communications.
  • Is the primary liaison with national, local, and specialized PD organizations, as is relevant to the fulfillment of the department’s strategic action plan and goals.


  • Works with CDPDO et al. to articulate an annual PD action plan and goals. Helps ensure alignment with D&I goals.
  • Manages the implementation of the strategic plan for PD by ensuring the efficient allocation of resources and the completion of projects in time and on budget.
  • Oversees the analysis, assessment, and measurement of PD initiatives. Leverages this information to improve PD programs.
  • Manages the annual PD budget process and submits the annual PD budget proposal for CDPDO approval.
  • Supervises the Senior PD Coordinator, PDI Coordinator, Administrative Assistant, and any future PD team member. Approves time entry and enforces policies.


  • 5+ years’ related experience at a law firm, government agency, or professional services organization. This experience includes the full spectrum of adult education/training including: creating curricula and syllabuses; monitoring and managing performance through data; content development and delivery; public speaking; project management; database management; report writing, and event planning experience, among others.  
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required (with an emphasis in Adult Education, Human Resources, Journalism, English, Communications, Marketing, or Public Relations).
  • Graduate degree or a JD degree a plus
